Speech by Guillaume Lemoine from ECT, March 28 at 4pm
During the “Territorial planning and site conversion” session, Guillaume Lemoine, ECT’s Land Development Manager and Biodiversity referent, will present the case of the Van Pelt site conversion in Lens, carried out by ECT in partnership with EPF Hauts-de-France.
Summary of speech: "Re-using excavated building site soil to transform an industrial wasteland into an urban forest".
Within the framework of the circular economy, this involves reusing and shaping “waste” (inert soil excavated from building sites) to create a support for an urban forest, thus giving a new use to neglected areas. The creation in 2022 and 2023 of a two-hectare forest using soil from local building sites will meet the needs of the area (creation of a multifunctional space: biodiversity, living environment, educational) and contribute to the fight against climate change (carbon storage and combating urban heat islands) by also avoiding long-distance truck traffic (reducing greenhouse gas emissions and road congestion).
Keywords
Urban forest, reuse of wasteland, public-private partnerships, ecological functionalities and continuum, carbon storage, ZAN, rehabilitation and re-functionalization of impacted or degraded soils, combating the collapse of biodiversity, adapting to climate change, circular economy, particularly of excavated soil.
