Interview with Isabelle Ruckebush, mayor of Houdain

Isabelle Ruckebush, mayor of Houdain (62), describes the transformation of a derelict municipal site into an urban park. She is delighted with the key role played by ECT Hauts-de-France in this environmental rehabilitation, at no cost to the municipality. The meeting took place during a visit by the local press to the site of this exemplary project.

A rehabilitation project at no cost to the municipality

Soon, the Chaussée Brunehaut Park will come to life where land was previously left. Located in Houdain, this ambitious project is the fruit of close collaboration between the municipality and ECT Hauts-de-France, with the aim of transforming 1.7 hectares of land into a nature and leisure area.

Isabelle Ruckebush emphasises a key aspect of this transformation: the project is self-financing. It costs the local authority nothing. “Thanks to the soil excavated from local building sites, we have been able to finance the restoration of this area in its entirety. It’s an ecological and economic solution that benefits everyone in Houdin.

A natural, friendly space, scheduled to open in spring 2025

The Chaussée Brunehaut Park will be more than just a green space. It will become a friendly, relaxing place for the residents of Houdain. A total of 1,600 trees and shrubs of local origin will be planted to green this natural area.

“We paid particular attention to the selection of plants. The aim is to create a harmonious ecosystem that respects local biodiversity,” explains Mrs Ruckebush. The people of Houdin will be able to enjoy this new space from spring 2025. “We can’t wait to see this park come to life and to see the benefits it will bring. This project symbolises our commitment to the environment and to creating attractive and sustainable public spaces,” concludes the Mayor.
